New information on Steven Universe from Rebecca Sugar

So I’m listening to this interview with Rebecca Sugar (starts about 40-45 minutes in), and I’m writing down everything important, and some of this stuff is just great!
(Warning, this post is a tad long)

  • “There are drawings of Sardonyx… um.. from the pilot era. I mean, I knew everybodies comibinations”
  • “I had a chart and I would tell people like this person plus this person equals this person, and this is their weapon”
  • “Fan reactions are really fun to watch, but uh, things that they want have uh.. already been done”
  • “There were things with Peridot that people wanted to see. By the time they even met her, we had already written her entire arc so we had sorta - our fingers were crossed like oh I hope you want this”
  • “Has anything surprised you as a creator?”
    “I always knew about Garnet, but the characters of Ruby and Sapphire didn’t really come together until we worked on them together, and who they are, and everyone sort of added something new to them”
    “In a lot of ways they kind of became me and Ian. We were running the show togehter.” “we would literally think ‘oh, we’re Garnet’ we were together literally 100% of the time”
  • “Sapphire didn’t always have one eye; that was something that happened as the show evolved”
  • “We have a full musical episode coming up”
    “It has like 7 songs in 11 minutes”
  • “(when casting) Do you look for singers?”
    “Yeah, I mean it-it totally depends on the part.” “Shelby Rabara who plays Peridot, she auditioned for Garnet at the start of the show.” “Jennifer Paz, she was almost Amethyst, and she’s Lapis now”
    “She [Shelby] helped us with tapdancing in the musical episode”
  • “Is there anyone you’d like to have (for voice acting) like a celebrity that might be coming up?”
    “I have one, but you have to wait, you have to wait, there’s someone coming up” “But it’s not gonna happen ‘til the fall”
  • “She (Alexia [Sardonyx]) is an amazing singer, I hope I can make that happen”
  • “I wanted to find a new way to talk about relationships” (Talking about fusion)
    “At the beginning I was just interested in the whole ‘blank plus blank equals black and HAS A HAMMER!’ That was just really interesting to me” she’s such a dork omg
    “You’re not necessarily the same person when you’re with someone else as you are alone; especially someone you’re very close to”
    “A new character is created in the space between you, when you love someone or even HATE someone, this intagible character is created between you”
  • “Pearl obviously has some unrequited love for Rose…”
    “Haha, I-I dunno if you can call it unrequited”
  • “The only true canon is what we make together as a team”
  • “I’m working on a children’s book version of The Answer”
  • “When Deedee is gone, Micheala and Zach can be a bit of a bad influence on each other! They say things they definitely would not say with Deedee around.” - I just thought this was cute.
  • “Do you have a finite endgame for Steven Universe in mind?”
    “Mm-hmmmm”
    “As the story develops could it possibly change? Has it already started to change?”
    “Oh yeah! It’s always changing. Um, like my fusion list, there’s sort of a plot that’s been pretty consistent that I want to arrive at, but it’s how they arrive there that keeps changing” “It’s something I’ve wanted to do since the beginning, but why I want to do it keeps changing too”
    “I would be prepared to write myself to the corner of the century if it means doing this story right”

Aaaand that’s it. Some really cool stuff from that interview, and I can’t wait to see what happens when the show returns in June!
